A young hiker was rescued after suffering a serious leg injury in an accident involving a rope swing near Jordan River. Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue responded to the call on Friday, where crews found the injured hiker with her family. The group was visiting the area and, according to rescuers, had brought the supplies needed to deal with an emergency despite being not far from where they were staying. That preparation proved valuable as the rescue unfolded. Crews secured the injured hiker for evacuation and used a wheeled stretcher system to help move her out of the area. She was then transferred to BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) for medical care and transportation. The rescue also included an unusual moment of downtime. As the team waited for BCEHS to arrive, the rescuers and their patient watched a meteor shower together. Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue later recognized several people and agencies involved in the response in a social media post. “Thank you to Brett, a park operator from the JDF Trail, for staying with the subject until we arrived. RCMSAR 37 for standing by in case we needed assistance. BCEHS for patient care and transport. Wishing our subject a smooth and speedy recovery!” it said. The rescue team said the hiker’s family was helpful throughout the response and emphasized how important it can be to carry basic emergency supplies, even on outings close to a place of accommodation. For the injured hiker, the difficult evacuation ended with medical care and an unexpected chance to take in the night sky along the way.
