A fiery crash on a Langford highway and a separate incident involving a vehicle driving erratically are under investigation by West Shore RCMP, who are highlighting two cases of suspected impaired driving in the community. The first collision happened Oct. 17 near the 2000 block of the Trans Canada Highway, where a sedan crossed the median and hit a rock wall beside the southbound lanes. “When officers arrived on scene the vehicle was engulfed in flames that were put out by Langford Fire Department,” West Shore RCMP said in a release. Both the driver and passenger were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police arrested the driver on suspicion of impaired driving and requested a blood sample to help determine their blood alcohol level. Investigators say no other vehicles were involved in the collision, and the investigation is continuing. Three days later, police received multiple reports of erratic driving around Goldstream Avenue in the early morning hours of Oct. 20. One caller reported that the vehicle had struck a fence. Officers found the vehicle and its 21-year-old male driver, who was suspected of being impaired by alcohol. “The driver provided breath samples into an approved roadside screening device registering a ‘Fail’ result,” RCMP said. He received a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. West Shore RCMP say officers removed 144 impaired drivers from local roads during the first nine months of 2026. Police are urging motorists to arrange for a sober ride before drinking, saying choosing not to drive impaired can prevent serious injuries and potentially save lives.
