Police investigate shootings that injured 1, damaged homes, vehicles in Surrey, B.C.

One person has been hurt and another has been arrested after shots rang out in Surrey's Newton neighbourhood Thursday night.

Police are investigating a pair of separate overnight shootings that sent one person to hospital and damaged homes and vehicles in Surrey, B.C.

Officers responded to the first report of shots fired inside a home in the city’s Newton neighbourhood just before midnight Thursday.

The Surrey Police Service says an injured man was found suffering from a gunshot wound at the scene near 140B Street and 59 Avenue.

The victim is believed to be in stable condition, while another man was arrested at the scene, police said in a statement.

Officers were called to a second shooting approximately 45 minutes later in the North Surrey area.

A witness who heard the gunshots told investigators there was a “distraught male” outside their door in the area of 111 Avenue and 160 Street, police said.

Officers with the RCMP’s Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit responded, quickly locating a suspect and arresting him.

Investigators found bullet casings at the scene and identified two homes and two vehicles that were damaged, though no injuries were reported.

The Surrey Police Service’s serious crimes unit is investigating the first shooting, while the Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit’s general investigation unit is investigating the second.

Neither shooting appears to be linked to ongoing incidents of extortion-related violence in the community, according to police.
