Vancouver woman fatally stabbed in Belize remembered as ‘remarkable’

A 65-year-old woman who split her time between B.C. and Central America was killed in a small village where she operated a spa.

The family of a 65-year-old woman fatally stabbed in Belize on Monday is in mourning.

Marty Thorne was found near her home in Bullet Tree Falls, a community not far from the border with Guatemala.

In recent decades, Thorne had spent time residing in Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast – as well as operating a spa in Belize.

“The family of Marty Thorne is heartbroken to confirm her tragic death in Belize,” reads a statement from her family sent to CTV News. “Marty was a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. She lived with deep compassion for people and an enduring love for our earth. Marty’s life was defined by kindness, generosity, and her unwavering care for others.

“Her family and loved ones are devastated by this senseless loss and are working with local authorities as investigations continue. The family asks for privacy as they grieve and remember a remarkable woman whose light and love will never be forgotten.”

Thorne was discovered by a property caretaker on Monday, according to local police.

One person has been taken into custody, with police seeking out others potentially involved.

Her killing has left locals in Bullet Tree Falls shocked.

“I know her kids,” family friend Michael Waight told Greater Belize Media. “They always say ‘Uncle Mike.’ And we are good buddies, you know? But, I never believe what happened to her. I was really sad what happened.”

Waight suggested Thorne was well liked by people in the area.

“I never saw her with enemies,” Waight said. “She was a very friendly. A good person. Like family.”

In a statement, Global Affairs Canada acknowledged it is aware of the death of a Canadian citizen in Belize and is providing consular assistance.
