Continued SkyTrain system expansion work is closing Broadway to vehicle traffic between Cambie and Alberta streets for six months, beginning Monday. Scheduled work during the lengthy two-block closure will see crews remove a temporary traffic deck and restore the roadway. This work comes as part of the Broadway subway project, which will extend the Millennium Line from VCC-Clark Station to Broadway and Arbutus—adding six new underground SkyTrain stations in the process. The announcement warned locals of noise from construction activity, typically falling between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., but noted that the schedule is subject to change. “We know that construction can be disruptive, and we are working hard to minimize impacts in your neighbourhood,” Broadway subway project staff said, in a statement. “Thank you for your continued patience while we build this important transportation infrastructure project.” According to the city of Vancouver’s website, sidewalks will remain open to pedestrians and access to businesses and residences “will be maintained at all times.” “Please watch for and obey traffic control personnel and all signs, and plan extra travel time,” reads a statement on behalf of the city. The city has said that transit and local traffic will be detoured around the closure through West 8th Avenue until work is complete. The 5.7-kilometre Broadway subway extension is scheduled to open in fall 2027.
