An impaired 34-year-old man was arrested early Friday morning after crashing a pickup truck into a nursing home in East Vancouver, according to police. After impact, the vehicle split in half and burst into flames, police said. The Vancouver Police Department heard from a witness that, at around 1:30 a.m., a grey GMC Sierra was travelling south on Renfrew Street when it collided with his vehicle near East 22nd Avenue, then veered off the roadway before colliding with the building. “Responding officers located the vehicle wreckage fully engulfed in flames,” the VPD said, in a statement. Google Maps pinpoints Three Links Care Centre at the southeast corner of Renfrew Street and East 22nd Avenue, and police said no injuries were reported by occupants of the impacted building or the witness. The VPD said the truck driver and his passenger were transported to hospital, and the driver was later “arrested for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation of a motor vehicle.” The driver will soon appear in court, and police said he was served a 90-day driving prohibition. The VPD said it seized what was left of the truck as part of its investigation and asked anyone with information about the incident to call the department’s Collision Investigation Unit at 604-717-3012 or email vpdciu@vpd.ca.
