The driver of a tractor-trailer was clocked going 81 km/h in a 30 zone in Prince George earlier this month. On Sept. 9, B.C. Highway Patrol was working on Old Cariboo Highway near Pine View Elementary in Prince George. Just after 12:15 p.m., officers observed the vehicle driving at excessive speeds through the school zone, police said After being pulled over however, it was discovered that speed was not the only issue at hand. “When the tractor-trailer was pulled over, the police officer noticed some defects,” said Sgt. Michael McLaughlin with BCHP in a statement Tuesday. “We called in Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement and both the trailer and the tractor were taken off the road.” The trailer was found to have ineffective brakes, and the tractor required further inspection and repairs. The driver, a 34-year-old from Edmonton, was issued a seven-day impound for excessive speeding. The driver was also handed several tickets, including for failing to produce an out-of-province registration, insurance, and failing to properly mount an electronic driver’s log. The total costs for the tow, impound, tickets, inspections and repairs will cost the driver more than $3,000. In total, BCHP issued two excessive speeding tickets, 15 additional speeding tickets, and 10 tickets for various offences, including using an electronic device while driving during the Sept. 9 school zone operation. “We’d rather you obey the law and drive safely, but if you choose otherwise, we’ll pass along financial consequences,” said McLaughlin.
