One person is dead after what police are calling a “tragic incident” at Cypress Mountain Resort on Thursday. The West Vancouver Police Department said in a statement Thursday night that it was “saddened to confirm that a fatality occurred” earlier that evening. “The deceased has been identified, and their family has been notified and is receiving support,” the WVPD statement reads. In an update Friday, police described the deceased as an 18-year-old man from Maple Ridge, saying he fell from a chairlift shortly before 7:30 p.m. Thursday. He was pronounced dead at the scene. “All available evidence points to this being a tragic accident,” said WVPD spokesperson Suzanne Birch, in Friday’s update. “There are no obvious indications of technical or mechanical issues with the chairlift. As the death appears to be non-suspicious, the investigation is now with the coroner’s office.” In its own statement, Cypress confirmed the deceased was a guest at the resort, referring further questions to police. “Cypress Mountain extends our heartfelt condolences and support to the guest’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” the resort said. The WVPD said it had sent Victims’ Services personnel to the scene to support witnesses. “If any members of the public haven’t had an opportunity to connect with us and would appreciate some support, we encourage them to reach out to us at 604-925-7468,” police said. The department also noted that Victim Link BC is available 24 hours a day at 1-800-563-0808 and VictimLinkBC.ca. “The West Vancouver Police Department extends our deepest condolences to all impacted by this tragic incident,” police said.
