Mounties say a motorcyclist was recently handed more than $1,700 in fines after he was caught on camera weaving through traffic at high speed on Highway 1 through Surrey. B.C. Highway Patrol says the motorcycle was captured on video by a witness on the highway near 176th Street on July 3, with the vehicle, its rider and the license plate “clearly visible” on the dashcam. The video allowed police to track down the motorcyclist four days later, when the 23-year-old received hefty fines. “When the video quality is high-quality, and we have a witness ready to testify in court, we can and do follow up with over-the-top driving violations,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said, in a news release Thursday. “It’s not hard to imagine how the speed and unsafe driving behaviour in this video could have easily led to the motorcyclist’s death.” Police say the total $1,769 in tickets were for driving without consideration, excessive speed of more than 60 km/h over the limit—five unsafe lane changes, four lane changes without signal, and failing to supply information. “We understand how much bad driving not only makes our highways unacceptably unsafe, it also annoys safe drivers,” McLaughlin continued. “We’re enforcing these laws to improve people’s behaviour by delivering real consequences.”
