New Westminster man found guilty of 2023 assault

A New Westminster man has been found guilty of several offences in connection to an investigation that began when a woman with “numerous lacerations” flagged down a special constable in October 2023.

Ryan Jensen was arrested the same day. Last week, the 34-year-old was found guilty of five offences, according to a statement from the New Westminster Police Department issued Wednesday.

Jensen was found guilty of two counts of breaching a release order and one count each of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and killing or injuring an animal, police said.

“This outcome reflects the unwavering dedication of numerous teams within the New Westminster Police Department,” said Sgt. Justine Thom, in the statement.

“From the initial call to supporting the victim at trial, every team involved played a crucial role.”

Online court records indicate that Jensen has not yet been sentenced. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 5, and he remains in custody.

The court documents are marked as a “K” file, a designation used to indicate cases of alleged intimate partner violence as they move through the court system.

The victim who initially flagged down police said she had been violently assaulted inside a home in the 300 block of Agnes Street. It was around 7 a.m. on Oct. 6, 2023. Just a few days earlier, police had been in the same block investigating reports of a shooting.

The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said at the time.

In its statement, the NWPD thanked the various specialized units that helped with the investigation, including the Major Crime Unit, the Forensic Identification Unit, the Victim Assistance Unit, patrol officers and the special constable who initially provided help to the victim.
