Police say a driver with a learner’s licence recently had her dad’s vehicle impounded after being caught speeding on the Coquihalla Highway. According to B.C. Highway Patrol, a 2026 Honda Pilot was clocked travelling 168 km/h in a 120 km/h zone south of Merritt on July 11. “The 20-year-old learner driver had five passengers, which would normally be a violation of the single passenger allowed by law, but she said that all five passengers were family,” Mounties wrote in a news release issued Monday. The Williams Lake resident was handed a $368 fine for excessive speed and the vehicle was towed away for a seven-day impound, police said. “This is a reminder to everyone that just because something is technically legal, that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said, in the release. “Learner drivers do not have the demonstrated skills to safely drive a large number of passengers- which is something this driver exemplified when she chose to speed.”
