The Vancouver Park Board has revealed the scheduled opening date for its most iconic outdoor pool. Pending a final inspection, Kitsilano Pool will open for swimmers on Wednesday, June 17. Outdoor pools at New Brighton and Second Beach opened over the May long weekend, and Maple Grove and Hillcrest pools are set to open on Monday, June 15. The schedule for Kitsilano Pool has varied over the years as the aged and damaged facility needs annual repairs before opening. The park board is weighing options for what to do with the beloved and beleaguered pool, which has been deemed at the end of its service life. A plan that would protect the existing pool, keeping it in operation for another 15 years, is estimated to cost $40 million, while a renovation that would extend its lifespan for 30 years is priced at around $90 million, according to the park board. A full replacement would cost between $230 to $300 million. Officials are expected to make a decision as part of the city’s 2027-2030 capital plan. This year, 75 per cent of public swim spaces are reserved for those who book online in advance, and the remaining quarter can be filled on a drop-in basis.
