Extortion-related shots fired at Surrey mansion for 2nd time, police say

For the second time in less than a week, a home in Surrey was shot at—the latest in a wave of extortion-related crime targeting the South Asian community.

A mansion in South Surrey was targeted with gunfire for the second time on Wednesday night in a case related to extortion, according to police.

The Surrey Police Service confirmed that officers were called to the home in the 17000 block of 32 Avenue around 7:35 p.m. for reports of shots fired. No one was injured in the incident.

Police stated that the investigation is in its early stages and that investigators are working to determine if the incident is related to other cases. The home was previously hit with gunfire last Saturday morning, an incident that was captured on camera, which left windows shattered and one person working on the exterior of the home injured.

Ian MacDonald of the SPS expressed concern over the repeated incidents, stating, “We have victims that are recoiling from what has now been a targeted incident twice.” He informed CTV News that there have been 95 extortion-related incidents and 44 incidents involving gunfire in 2025. “No, the numbers don’t look good, the incidents don’t look good, and having anyone in the community not feel safe is not great,” MacDonald added.

Three individuals have been deported as a result of efforts by the task force targeting violent extortion threats in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. In a recent update, Solicitor General Nina Krieger explained that authorities have launched immigration investigations into 78 individuals.

During a press conference on Thursday, Premier David Eby acknowledged the need for the task force to communicate more clearly with the public about ongoing efforts. “Our team is ready to ensure that those resources, and any additional changes or information that they need, is made quickly available,” he said.

John Rustad, Leader of the Official Opposition, criticized the provincial government for not taking sufficient action. “We have not seen the action that needs to be taken to treat this with the seriousness that it is,” he stated, calling for a federal task force dedicated to tackling crime in B.C. He proposed a partnership with the RCMP, Canada Border Services Agency, and other federal agencies.

Brenda Locke, mayor of Surrey, echoed Rustad’s sentiments, saying, “The federal government must step up.” She emphasized that the city can only do so much, stating, “We will continue to do whatever we can from the city’s perspective. But again, this is transnational crime. This is not something that local police departments can deal with.”

Locke noted that these extortion-related incidents have had a ripple effect throughout the city, saying, “People are sending their families away because they’re too afraid to live here.”
