Firefighters removed a person from a burning home in Burnaby Friday night and performed CPR, but were unable to save his life. Crews were called to the blaze in the 4800 block of Smith Avenue around 5:20 p.m. and arrived to find flames emerging from windows in both the front and back of the home. Three people were inside when the fire began and two were able to get out safely, according to firefighters. Burnaby Fire Department Asst. Chief Derek Masaro told CTV News his understanding was that the male victim initially left the house, then went back in to get something. Masaro was unsure of the deceased’s age. Crews entered the building to rescue the person, brought him outside and performed CPR, but saw “no life signs,” Masaro said. B.C. Emergency Health Services told CTV News it dispatched four ambulances to the scene and provided emergency treatment to one person, but no patients were transported to hospital. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Saturday, according to Masaro.
