The Westham Island Bridge in Delta, B.C., remains closed to vehicle traffic Wednesday morning after being damaged in what TransLink called a “marine incident.” Few details have been shared about what happened, except that it prompted damage assessment and repairs on Tuesday. The crossing is still open to pedestrians in the meantime. TransLink also said a shuttle service will be running between the bridge, Willington Point Park, Ladner Centre and the Ladner bus loop while the closure remains in effect. “This will allow people travelling to or from Westham Island to take the shuttle to the bridge and walk across, or make the return trip the same way,” the transit provider said in an update Wednesday. “We appreciate the patience of residents as we work to reopen the bridge.” The City of Delta said getting the bridge reopened quickly could required temporary repairs, and that there could be weight restrictions in place until permanent repairs can be completed. A full inspection is being completed Wednesday, after which the first priority will be to determine if “a small fire truck can safely cross the bridge to ensure emergency service,” the city said in a statement. “We understand how disruptive this situation is and remain focused on safety, clear communication, and restoring reliable access as soon as possible,” the city said.
