A 25-year-old man is facing charges after police in Abbotsford say he was caught driving more than 100km/h over the speed limit while impaired. The man was arrested late Tuesday night after an officer clocked the grey pickup truck he was driving going 198 km/h in a 80km/h zone, according to the Abbotsford Police Department. “Due to the extreme speed, additional officers were called to assist as the vehicle continued…reaching speeds in excess of 200 km/h in the posted 60km/h zone,” the detachment said in a statement Friday. The chase ended when officers deployed a spike belt, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle and collide with a light pole at 48 Avenue and 272 Street, according to police. He was arrested for dangerous driving and for refusing to provide a breath sample after police allegedly detected alcohol on his breath. “Criminal charges are pending, and the driver is scheduled for a first court appearance on April 13,” AbbyPD said in the statement, adding that the man was also handed a 90-day driving suspension. He is one of 167 impaired drivers police in Abbotsford have removed from the road so far this year, according to the release. AbbyPD say they have also impounded 57 vehicles for excessive speed and initiated four dangerous driving investigations.
