Richmond RCMP are recommending charges after arresting 14 people in a one-day theft enforcement operation earlier this month. The Feb. 15 arrests stemmed from the detachment’s ongoing “Boost and Bust” initiative, in which loss prevention officers—security staff hired by retailers to spot and document shoplifting—work with plainclothes front-line officers to target property crime in Richmond’s downtown core. In a statement issued Tuesday, Richmond RCMP said of the 14 people arrested, two are youth, two are believed to have ties to an organized retail theft group, and one individual was wanted on an outstanding warrant from another jurisdiction. “The same individual is also a suspect in an earlier theft file, for which investigators will now move forward with recommended charges,” the release explains. Mounties say they plan to recommend charges in 10 of the cases. The operation led to the recovery of about $3,200 worth of merchandise during the one-day operation, with “clothing, personal goods and food” listed as the items most frequently targeted. “These targeted operations demonstrate the value of intelligence‑led policing and strong partnerships with local retailers,” Richmond RCMP Insp. Vaz Kassam said in the statement. “Retail theft affects businesses, staff and the broader community. By working together, we can disrupt this activity and help maintain a safe environment for everyone who lives, works and shops in Richmond.” Mounties say they plan to conduct regular Boost and Bust operations throughout the year.
