13 impoundments in 10 hours: Abbotsford police crack down on excessive speeding

Police in Abbotsford say they impounded 13 vehicles in just 10 hours Friday, part of a seasonal traffic enforcement crackdown.

“With the arrival of nicer weather, it seems some drivers mistakenly believe the speed limit increases along with the temperature,” the Abbotsford Police Department said in a social media post Saturday.

The department did not specify where in the city it conducted its 10 hours of enforcement, but a photo included in the post shows one traffic stop at the intersection of Zero Avenue and Bradner Road.

The 13 vehicles were impounded because of excessive speeding, which is defined as travelling more than 40 km/h over the posted limit.

Drivers caught speeding excessively can have their vehicles impounded for seven days on a first offence, and longer if they’ve been caught doing so on any previous occasion within the last two years.

Friday’s crackdown also yielded 47 speeding tickets, two driving suspensions and one impaired driver who was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, Abbotsford police said.

“So far this year, AbbyPD has removed 107 excessive speeders from Abbotsford roadways, issued over 1,800 violation tickets, and removed 293 impaired drivers,” the post concludes.
