A grandmother from Markham says she is filled with gratitude after recently claiming a $1 million top prize on a Ultra Scratch ticket. Thavamanidevy J., a mother of two and grandmother of two, loves playing scratch tickets. She says she was sitting on a bench outside of a gas station when she learned she had won $1 million. “I didn’t understand all the zeros at first. I called my husband right away and explained what I was seeing,” Thavamanidevy said as she collected her cheque at the OLG Prize Centre. “The walk home was only about 20 minutes, but it felt like two hours! I felt a mix of excitement, shock, and disbelief.” When she returned home that day, Thavamanidevy says she called her son who immediately popped by for a visit. She says her whole family is “thrilled and a bit shocked” by her win. “I’m filled with joy and gratitude,” Thavamanidevy said of how it feels to win the lottery. The Markham woman plans to pay it forward with her money by helping her children and grandchildren first. Thavamanidevy said she would also like to travel to Jamaica and Mexico with her loved ones. The winning ticket was bought from a Petro-Canada on Ninth Line in Markham.
