A woman from Beamsville, Ont., who has been accused of stealing more than $43,000 worth of gold and silver in Pennsylvania was arrested while attempting to cross back into Canada, according to police in the United States. The alleged theft occurred May 11 in Bensalem Township, Penn., which is an approximately 40-minute drive from Philadelphia. According to Bensalem Township Police, the victim was waiting for the delivery of a package containing gold and silver when a family member saw the suspect claim to be the rightful owner, signing for the package before fleeing the area with the stolen goods. The precious metals were estimated to be worth a total of $43,549. Investigators say they then used different tracking and surveillance technology, including licence-plate readers, intersection cameras and other surveillance footage, to track the suspect’s vehicle, a Nissan sedan. Police discovered the suspect rented the vehicle from an Enterprise Rent-A-Car at the Philadelphia airport on May 10. On May 11, after the alleged theft, police say she returned the vehicle and flew to Arizona. An arrest warrant was issued for the suspect and police then notified U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Hogan was in the United States while on a visa at the time of her arrest. On July 5, while attempting to cross back into Canada at a border crossing in Lewiston, N.Y. police arrested Kaileigh Hogan, of Beamsville, Ont. She is facing numerous charges, including forgery (F2), theft by unlawful taking (F3) and theft by deception (F3). The charges have not been tested in court. Hogan was taken to Bensalem Township Police headquarters, where an arraignment occurred and her bail was set at $100,000. She is currently being held at Bucks County Correctional Facility.
