Tens of thousands in downtown Toronto and the east end were in the dark for several hours on Wednesday evening due to widespread power outages. Areas in downtown east, including Regent Park, Cabbagetown, and Distillery District, were impacted as well as the neighbourhoods of Riverdale, Leslieville, Port Lands, and East York. Power outages were also reported in Thorncliffe Park. At the height of the disruption, as many as 31,000 Toronto Hydro customers had no electricity. At 10:30 p.m., Toronto Hydro said power had been fully restored. The utility company had said the outages were caused by a “Hydro One loss of power supply.” “We sincerely apologize for the disruption this outage caused and appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers and the community while crews worked to restore power safely,” Toronto Hydro said. A Hydro One spokesperson said the outage occurred while maintenance work was being carried out at its Basin Transformer Station. “Hydro One crews responded immediately and repairs have been made to restore power to Toronto Hydro and their customers,” the spokesperson said.
