Ontario’s police watchdog investigating after 26-year-old man arrested for impaired driving

A man in his 20s was arrested for impaired driving after fleeing the scene, where a vehicle struck another and two pedestrians in Etobicoke on Saturday night.

A 26-year-old man was arrested for impaired driving on Saturday, after fleeing the scene of a collision, Toronto police said.

It happened at around 6:20 p.m. in the area of East Mall and Bloor Street. Police said they were responding to several reports of a “vehicle driving erratically at a high rate of speed.”

A Honda Civic had struck an SUV, police said. While the driver of the Honda Civic fled the scene, he was arrested a short time later.

On Saturday, Toronto police told CP24 the vehicle had struck two pedestrians, and were then sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Const. Laura Brabant confirmed on Sunday the occupants of the SUV were injured and that the collision did not appear to involve any pedestrians.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed a man and woman were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

“At the time, there was a lot going on with this collision and the circumstances,” Brabant said in an email.

On Sunday, Toronto police said the SIU invoked its mandate, but it is unclear why they did.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates police conduct that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

The roads in the area reopened at around 8:35 a.m. on Sunday.
