‘Loss of supply from Hydro One’: Large power outage hits Toronto’s east end, East York, and southwest Scarborough

Power is back on for thousands of people following an outage that impacted at least 5,000 homes on Saturday.

Thousands of households were left in the dark on Saturday night following a power outage that impacted a large swath of Toronto’s east end, including parts of East York as well as southwest Scarborough.

Residents in several neighbourhoods including The Beach, Upper Beach, Leslieville, Taylor-Massey, Woodbine Gardens, Oakridge, Birchmount Park, and even Scarborough Junction were affected by the power disruption, which was reported shortly before 8 p.m.

The boundaries of the outage ran roughly from Greenwood Avenue to the west, south along Queen Street East and Danforth Road, north of Danforth and St. Clair avenues, and all the way east of Brimley Road.

Toronto Hydro told CP24 that is it “aware of an ongoing outage in the east end of the city and are in the process of collecting more details.”

“We will follow up with more information shortly,” a spokesperson wrote in an email.

In a follow-up statement, the electricity company said the cause of the disruption is “due to a loss of supply from Hydro One.”

“The outage is currently affecting over 3,000 customers in and around the boundaries of Danforth Ave / Queen St / Victoria Park Ave / Greenwood Ave — down from more than 13,000 earlier this evening,“ Toronto Hydro said.

“We are working closely with Hydro One to support restoration efforts and appreciate our customers’ patience as work continues. For further details about the outage, please contact Hydro One.”
