Tiger Woods will be returning to golf in April to play the Masters.

It a statement Tuesday, Woods said he is returning to golf after a four-month hiatus in which he dealt with the fallout from marital infidelities.

"The Masters is where I won my first major and I view this tournament with great respect. After a long and necessary time away from the game, I feel like I'm ready to start my season at Augusta," he said.

Woods last played Nov. 15, winning the Australian Masters. But about two weeks later, he crashed his SUV into a tree outside his Florida home, leading to the revelation that he had been cheating on his wife, Elin Nordegren.

""I have undergone almost two months of inpatient therapy, and I am continuing my treatment. Although I'm returning to competition, I still have a lot of work to do in my personal life," Woods said.

"When I finally got into a position to think about competitive golf again, it became apparent to me that the Masters would be the earliest I could play."

Bob Weeks, TSN's golf analyst, said the Masters return makes sense for Woods because it is a private event and the club can control much of the expected frenzy.

"It will be a little easier start for Tiger, if there is such a thing," Weeks told CTV News Channel.

Augusta is a course Woods knows well as he has already won four Masters.

Woods only returned to practice in recent weeks.

The Masters begins April 8.

Woods' return is expected to be a ratings bonanza for professional golf, which has struggled without its top star.
