TORONTO - Tesla Motors is now selling its Roadster electric sports car in Canada.

Tesla said it has delivered 20 Roadsters to Canadian customers.

The car began production in the U.S. in 2008, but Transport Canada only recently approved it for Canadian roadways.

Tesla, based in Palo Alto, Calif., said it plans to open its first Canadian dealership in Toronto later this year. The dealership will also serve as a hub for Tesla's service technicians, who travel to buyers' homes to perform annual inspections and repairs.

The Roadster -- which starts at C$125,000, slightly higher than the US$109,000 starting price in the U.S. -- is a fully electric car that plugs into a conventional outlet.

Tesla says the average Roadster can go nearly 400 kilometres on a single charge.
