The Toronto FC fans involved in a televised confrontation with a reporter over the weekend "will be banned" from all facilities, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon.

CityNews reporter Shauna Hunt was confronted by several men while recording a standup outside of the Toronto FC game on Sunday. The men shouted at her, "F--- her right in the p---."

The camera continued rolling as she confronted some of the men.

"We're appalled that this trend of disrespectful behaviour would make its way to our city, let alone anywhere near our stadium," MLSE said in the statement. "We are working to identify the individuals, and when we do they will be banned from all of our facilities."

The disturbing "FHRITP" trend, which involves shouting the vulgar phrase into a journalist's microphone, has happened to other female reporters in various cities across North America. It is believed to have started in the U.S. in 2014 when a man posted fake news reports in which a heckler yells the phrase into the camera or microphone.

MLSE says it will work with local media outlets to protect their female reporters from future hecklers.

"Our organization is committed to an environment where everyone can feel safe and included and discrimination or intolerance of any kind will be met with a swift and serious response," the organization said.

"We're thankful to our vast majority of fans for standing up against such sexist behaviour and working with us to help prevent it in the future."

One of the fans involved in the incident on Sunday will lose his job as a result, his employer told CTV Toronto.

"Hydro One is taking steps to terminate the employee for violating our Code of Conduct," a representative of the company said in a statement.

"Respect for all people is engrained in the Code of Conduct and in our Core Values and we are committed to a work environment where discrimination or harassment of any type is met with zero tolerance."
