RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Brazilian forward David Correa was targeted by police raids carried out Monday as part of an investigation into drugs and weapons trafficking, his Vasco da Gama club said. Rio de Janeiro police said that around 100 police took part in the raids aimed at a “criminal organization” with branches in several Brazilian states. It added that “professional sportspeople” were suspected of links to the organization and that four arrest warrants and 15 search warrants were executed. Local media said that investigators raided Correa’s home in the upscale Rio neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca as well as his club’s training ground. Vasco director Admar Lopes told a press conference that the club was “cooperating with authorities.” He said that Correa, 30, “will continue training normally in the coming days and be available for matches,” pending the outcome of the probe. On the weekend, Correa scored the third goal in Vasco’s 3-1 win over Cruzeiro in Brazil’s Serie A championship, ending an eight-game winless streak.
