A sobering display is arriving in Saskatoon this week to remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and SGI will place a smashed vehicle near the Alice Turner Library on Wednesday, at the intersection of Nelson Road and Attridge Drive. “The visually impactful campaign features a smashed vehicle placed alongside busy roads and intersections as a reminder of one of the potential consequences of impaired driving,” MADD explained in a news release. The annual campaign is a partnership between MADD and SGI, with smashed vehicles placed in high traffic locations in various cities around the province. The Saskatoon campaign was spearheaded by Lou and Linda Van de Vorst, who lost their son, daughter-in-law and two young grandchildren to an impaired driver in January 2016. “We don’t want other families to deal with the same kind of grief and pain we experience, because somebody chose to drive impaired,” Linda Van de Vorst says, “We miss our loved ones every day, so anything we can do to prevent people from drinking and driving impaired or driving high, we will continue to do.” The vehicle will be on display at five different locations from June 10 to Sept. 15., and will move to a new high-visibility location in Saskatoon every three weeks. “We trust this crashed vehicle will cause individuals to think twice before getting behind the wheel,” added Van de Vorst. RCMP Traffic Services says 33 Saskatchewan people were killed in drug or alcohol-related crashes in 2025. RELATED STORIES
