WATCH: Saskatoon firefighters braved the extreme cold on Friday afternoon to rescue a dog from the South Saskatchewan River.

Saskatoon firefighters braved the extreme cold on Friday afternoon to rescue a dog from the South Saskatchewan River.

The fire department says the call came in around 2 p.m., about a dog floating down the river on a piece of ice, near the University Bridge.

Crews tried coaxing the dog back to the land, but when that failed, they launched an inflatable rescue boat.

Crews were able to reach the dog and bring it safely to land.

The fire department says, despite the frigid temperatures, the dog is in good health.
