Sask. excavation company hit with $58K fine after trench collapse

A Saskatchewan excavation company was slapped with a $58,000 fine after one of its workers was seriously injured in a trench collapse near North Battleford.

Triple 7 Excavating Ltd. pleaded guilty in December to two violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, according to a release from the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety.

The ministry says Triple 7 Excavating failed to adequately protect the worker, who was working in a trench that was over 1.2 meters deep, and did not disclose the incident to the ministry in a timely fashion.

According to the ministry, the incident occurred in June 2022 in the RM of Parkdale and caused the worker to be hospitalized for an extended period.

The company was issued a fine of $41,500 and a victim surcharge of $16,600.
