For the first time in school history the University of Saskatchewan women’s basketball team has won back-to-back national titles. The Huskies won their fourth title in 11 years, defeating the University of New Brunswick Reds 77-68 Sunday in Quebec City. Head Coach Lisa Thomaidis said experience and key scores were what led to the Huskies claiming the Bronze Baby championship trophy. “You have to give credit to UNB, and it took us a while to adjust our defence, but our overall team toughness and resilience managed to get us through.” Logan Reider led the way for the Huskies with 19 points and was named Nike Player of the Game. Ella Murphy Wiebe - who scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the final - was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The Huskies went 20-0 in the regular season and lost just one playoff game in conference play, before winning three straight games at nationals to claim the ultimate prize. The women’s basketball team wasn’t the only Huskies squad with plenty to celebrate over the weekend. The Huskie men’s hockey team earned a second consecutive Canada West title, defeating the Mount Royal University Cougars 4-2 Saturday in Calgary to sweep the best-of-three final. At the national track and field championships in Winnipeg, the U of S women’s team finished second overall in team competition with six medals. Eight different Huskies won medals Saturday, with Olamide Olaloku setting a Canadian record in the triple jump.
