MARTENSVILLE, Sask. - A Saskatoon-area veterinary clinic is warning the public to be wary of bats this summer.

The clinic in Martensville, Sask., says it was informed by the Agriculture Department that three Big Brown bats tested positive for rabies in May and June.

Clinic officials say that's an unusual number of bats to test positive for rabies in such a short time.

They say since female bats are gathering in maternity roosts now, there could be a significant number of rabid bats in the area.

The vets say bats are unlikely to bite humans or animals unless they're trying to escape after being caught.

The best precaution is to have pets vaccinated against rabies and to avoid contact with rabid animals, even dead ones.
