Voluntary water conservation measures in effect for Regina, Moose Jaw

WATCH: Residents in Regina and Moose Jaw are being asked to conserve water as the water treatment plant faces a power outage.

The City of Regina is asking residents to conserve water following a power outage at the Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant.

Tuesday at 9 p.m., the water facility experienced a brief power outage. Due to a mechanical issue, the system was taken offline during the restart process.

Repair crews are now working to restore operations as quickly as possible.

Until the repairs are complete, the city is encouraging residents and businesses to refrain from watering lawns, reduce shower times, only wash cars for health or safety reasons, and only use washing machines and dishwashers when full.

The city’s emergency backup water wells have been activated and are supplying clean drinking water to residents.

There may be a slight discoloration to the water, but it is safe to drink, the city says.

Carolyn Kalim, the director of water, waste & environment at the City of Regina, said the city will be reducing its water use until the system is back online.

“We’re not performing street sweeping, and we have suspended our water main flushing activities,” she said.

Voluntary water conservation measures in Regina were put in place earlier in 2025. Before that, the last time measures were put in place was 2015.

The City of Moose Jaw also uses the water plant. Their residents are being advised to adhere to the same conservation requests.

There is an update from the plant expected Thursday.
