A name has officially been chosen for a new school in Harbour Landing. Regina Public Schools (RPS) announced Wednesday that the upcoming joint-use school in the area will be named Meadowlark School, after the western meadowlark bird, which can be found in Saskatchewan. The name was voted on unanimously at Tuesday’s RPS Board of Education meeting following September’s public engagement. RPS received over 200 submissions from students at nearby schools and the public at large. “It’s exciting to see this new school becoming a reality for our community,” said Chairperson Adam Hicks. “A school’s name is more than letters on the outside of a building; it’s a symbol of community, a landmark, and a source of pride. Soon, students will proudly wear their school colours, staff will foster a sense of belonging, and families will share in the pride of being part of Meadowlark School.” The name “Meadowlark” was chosen in four different submissions. The western meadowlark can be found on Saskatchewan’s grasslands and was chosen as a “fitting symbol” of Saskatchewan’s natural landscape and the communities that call it home. The school is expected to open in fall 2027 and serve 450 students. It’s expected to serve 550 students by its second year. The school was created with the intent of assuaging capacity issues at the joint-use Harbour Landing Elementary School and St. Kateri Tekakwitha, among other affected schools. These capacity issues have twice caused the school division to redraw its boundaries for several schools. “As Regina continues to grow, we need learning spaces that meet the needs of our students and families,” said Mark Haarmann, director of education and CEO at Regina Public Schools. “I’m eager to see Meadowlark School take shape and welcome its first students who will help build its community.”
