Thanksgiving weekend storm brings first taste of winter to Saskatchewan

A strong fall storm system from Montana gave much of Saskatchewan its first taste of winter with snowfall and rain reported right across the province.

According to a weather summary published Tuesday afternoon, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says the storm exited Montana into southwestern Saskatchewan Saturday afternoon, before gradually making its way across the province.

Sunday morning saw the rainfall turn to snow in the west where it slowly spread eastward that evening.

Data from ECCC, NavCanada, SK fire and CoCORaHS, several communities reported more than 40 millimetres (mm) of precipitation.

They included Wynyard (45.4 mm), Hudson Bay (46.4 mm), and Mista (44.2 mm). Other communities which received notable precipitation included Nipawin (32.1 mm), Melfort (20.7 mm) and Strasbourg (28.7 mm).

Both Regina and Saskatoon did not come out unscathed, with the cities reporting 27 mm and 18 mm respectively.

Snow measurements were received for some centres in centimetres (cm), such as Strasbourg (7.6 cm), Eatonia (5 cm).
