Numerous power outages were reported in Saskatchewan following a heavy downpour on Sunday morning. Throughout the day, SaskPower responded to outages in Regina, Watrous, Fort Qu’Appelle, Eston, Manitou Beach, Waldron, among other areas. In Regina, crews repaired outages in areas like McInnis Crescent and Hammond Road, Parkridge Creekside, Glencairn Eastview, Ross Industrial Park, Warehouse District, North Central, Rosemont, Windsor Place and Dewdney. As of 5 p.m. Sunday, only Coronation Park (affecting McInnis and Hammond) had yet to be repaired. Outside Regina, crews were also still investigating the cause of outages in the Assiniboia (Coronach Willow Bunch) and Humboldt (Simpson Imperial). Many areas of western, southeastern and central Saskatchewan were under a severe thunderstorm watch as of Sunday afternoon. Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Outlook and Kindersley were among the affected areas. Conditions in those areas are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms, according to Environment Canada. The storms are expected to move northeast throughout the day and night, and could produce strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. “When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” read Environment Canada’s alert. “Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility. Strong wind gusts can damage trees, buildings and overturn vehicles. Large hail can cause significant damage and injury.” Earlier in the day, southeastern areas like Kipling were also hit with a heavy morning downpour, which brought large hail.
