Sask. RCMP now searching for vehicle and trailer in connection to Weyburn highway shooting

The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes unit continues to investigate the suspicious death that occurred September 12th northwest of Weyburn on Highway #39.

The Saskatchewan RCMP are now asking for the public’s help in identifying another driver that was travelling near Weyburn at the time of a fatal shooting on Friday night.

In an update issued just after 9 p.m. Sunday, RCMP said investigators were working to identify a vehicle and trailer that were travelling on Highway 39 near Weyburn at around 8 p.m. on Sept. 12.

No details were provided regarding the make and model– only that it was a vehicle pulling a trailer. According to RCMP, the vehicle travelled south on Range Road 2151 northwest of Weyburn and stopped at the intersection of Highway 39 between the Viterra and Richardson Pioneer grain terminals.

The vehicle then turned northwest on Highway 39, driving away from Weyburn.

“This occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Sept. 12 and given this timing, the owner/driver may have valuable information to assist the investigation,” RCMP said in the update.

Earlier on Sunday, the service had asked for the public’s help in identifying the driver of a white pickup truck that was in the area at the time of the incident. Police also believed the truck was possibly damaged by a gunshot.

However, in its update Sunday night, Saskatchewan RCMP revealed that its investigators had identified the driver of the white pickup truck and confirmed that the vehicle was not damaged and not connected to the ongoing suspicious death investigation.

Police were initially called to the scene of a serious injury around three kilometres northwest of Weyburn on Highway 39 Friday evening.

Once on the scene, investigators determined that a black Ford Explorer was travelling towards Weyburn when the passenger of the vehicle, a 44-year-old woman from Weyburn, was hit by a bullet.

She was later declared dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV, who was the only other person in the vehicle, was uninjured. RCMP note that the driver is not considered a suspect and is not in police custody.

In its initial update on Saturday, Sept. 13, RCMP said its investigation to date indicated that the shooting may have been random in nature – and asked the public to be vigilant.

“RCMP are carefully monitoring this unfolding investigation and if an urgent public safety risk is identified, we will notify the public immediately,” the service added.
