After re-signing starter Trevor Harris on Thursday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders signed backup quarterback Tommy Stevens to a two-year extension on Friday. The Riders have now re-signed two of their three main quarterbacks used during the 2025 season that saw Saskatchewan capture the Grey Cup with a 25-17 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Nov. 16. Jake Maier, who spent the majority of the season as the primary backup to Harris, signed a one-year contract with the Riders on Jan. 9, 2025, after being acquired in a trade with the Calgary Stampeders. Maier and Jack Coan, the fourth quarterback who occupied a spot on the practice squad, are eligible for free agency on Feb. 11. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Stevens joined the Riders as a free agent on Feb. 11, 2025, after three seasons with the Stampeders. A third-down specialist, Stevens suited up in 14 regular season games in 2025. He gained 183 yards on 50 carries, scoring five touchdowns. Stevens converted 33 of 36 third-down gambles in the regular season for a success rate of 91.7 per cent. Stevens also tied a franchise record for touchdowns in a Grey Cup game by scoring two touchdowns against the Alouettes. He shares the mark with running back Kory Sheets and receiver Geroy Simon who scored two touchdowns each in Saskatchewan’s 45-23 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 2013 Grey Cup game. Stevens, who will turn 29 on Dec. 16, has completed 12 of 21 passes for 81 yards and one touchdown in four CFL seasons. His lone CFL touchdown pass came on a 14-yard toss to Richie Sindini in a 32-21 Calgary victory over Saskatchewan on Oct. 22. 2022. Stevens has also rushed 210 times for 868 yards, scoring 30 touchdowns, in his career.
