People filled Wascana Centre for a watch party of the World Cup’s final match. Hundreds of Regina residents came out on Sunday to watch Spain play against Argentina live through a massive screen at Wascana Park Queen Elizabeth. Organized by the City of Regina, Ward 6 Coun. Victoria Flores said planning the event came together quickly thanks to support from volunteers and local businesses. “I was at a watch party with the Brazilian community in Regina and it just reminded me of what it’s like to watch soccer with Latin American people,” Flores said, referring to how the idea for the event came about. “It’s a whole experience. I was thinking Canada is hosting, we’re doing really great at the World Cup … I didn’t hear of anyone hosting a big community watch party and I was like, ‘Why not?’” Food trucks and family activities were also offered at the all-day event. One fan and volunteer, Mustafa Gill, said the event was unique to the city. “It is a great event, everybody’s out here. It’s honestly something I’ve never seen before in Regina specifically,” Gill said. “It’s good to see the people out here just having a good time and watch the beautiful game.” The Saskatchewan Soccer Association said the soccer community across the province is very active. “We believe there’s a lot of people here that love this sport,” said the club’s president Andrew Kitchen. “Getting to see them all at one place, doesn’t matter what culture, religion, they’re all out here enjoying it together to watch the finals, celebrating together. It won’t matter who wins or loses.” Spain ended up beating Argentina 1-0.
