Regina police warning of scams involving fake STARS Lottery calls

Unknown number calling in the middle of the night. Phone call from stranger. Person holding mobile and smartphone in bedroom bed home late. Unexpected call woke up.

Regina police are warning the public to stay vigilant after reports of a lottery scam targeting residents.

Police say they have received multiple complaints of callers posing as STARS Lottery employees, telling victims they have won cash or a new vehicle.

The scam involves requesting a small “fee” to claim the prize, then directing victims to purchase gift cards or provide personal banking information over the phone.

Police are reminding the public that legitimate organizations, including STARS, will never ask for payment to release a prize.

Officials are urging residents to never share personal or financial information over the phone, by email, or through unfamiliar websites.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call is asked to hang up immediately and contact the organization directly to verify the information.

Police say public awareness is key to preventing these types of frauds and are encouraging people to share the warning with friends and family.
