The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall of a brand of coconut meat due to potential salmonella contamination. Captain’s Choice Coconut Meat (400 g) is in the process of being recalled. The product was distributed to Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Affected codes include: The CFIA says there have been no reported illnesses associated with the product. “Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” the agency alert read. According to the CFIA, young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at risk of contracting serious and deadly infections. Those who are considered healthy may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications could include severe arthritis.
