Here’s what’s happening in Regina over the Labour Day long weekend

As the Labour Day long weekend approaches and families gear up for back to school, people may be looking to soak up some sunny summer days before fall weather hits.

From the Labour Day Classic showdown between the Riders and the Blue Bombers, to an outdoor market and food festival, there are plenty of things happening around the Queen City for football fans and non football fans alike.

Saturday, Aug. 30

Rider Fan Day

Ahead of Sunday’s Labour Day Classic, fans will have the chance to meet their favourite players and take part in some fun activities at Mosaic Stadium.

Gate 1 will open to fans at 10 a.m., with a walk-through starting at 10:30 a.m.

The field will open to the public around 11:30 a.m. and will feature a family fun zone, an appearance by Gainer the Gopher, the Rider pep band, the Rider cheer team, and more, according to the Riders.

Players and coaches will be available for autographs for one hour, with the time subject to change based on the availability of players and coaches.

The main events will end at 2 p.m., but there will be a RiderFit fitness class hosted by GoodLife Fitness on the main field from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Summer’s End Outdoor Market

Hosted by Local Market YQR, the annual Summer’s End Outdoor Street Market will take place right outside Local Market at 1377 Hamilton St.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the street in front of the market will be closed off and transformed into a family-friendly shopping experience.

People will get the opportunity to check out items from several local artisans and businesses. Vendors will be set up on the street and in the Local Food Hall. The main market will be open and dance workshops will also be available.

As well, children’s activities, entertainment, and food will be available.

Taste of the Philippines

From 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and continuing into Sunday, the Taste of the Philippines food festival will give people a chance to try authentic Filipino cuisine from local food trucks and vendors.

While food is a big part of the event, visitors will also be able to check out handmade goods and crafts, as well as take in live music, cultural dance, and performances.

A colourful parade and a street dance party under the stars will also be featured.

The event is free to attend.

Provincial BMX bike championships

The Sask. Cup BMX Grands and Championships will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with races scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. The event will take place at 13th Ave BMX Club at 5153 13th Avenue.

Entry to the event is free, with 50 / 50 tickets, raffle tables, concessions, and the El Tropezon food truck available for visitors as well.

According to the BMX club, competitors range from five-years-old to over 50-years-old, taking part in different skill categories. Organizers expect 90-125 races to be completed over the two-day event, with the winners to be crowned on Sunday.

Level up Celebration

For families and kids to celebrate their summer reading success, an event will be held at the Regina Public Library’s (RPL) Sherwood Village Branch.

From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a music performance, interactive story time, balloon creations, and a hands-on Family Art Studio.

According to the RPL, kids will also be able to explore activity stations, complete challenges, and earn stamps on their game cards to unlock surprises.

Sunday, Aug. 31

Labour Day Classic

Football fans will be flocking to the sold-out Labour Day Classic at Mosaic Stadium where the Saskatchewan Roughriders will take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Kickoff is at 5 p.m.

Regina Reggae Festival

The inaugural Regina Reggae Festival will take place in Victoria Park from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. for a full day of music, culture, and community.

According to event organizers, the event will feature some of the most exciting names in reggae, ska, and roots music, including Jah Cutta and the Door Crashers, as well as Dr. Bird & Blue Beat, with more performers to be announced.
