SUDBURY, Ont. - Liberal Glenn Thibeault has won the Sudbury, Ont., byelection.

Thibeault, who defected from the federal New Democrats to run for the provincial Liberals, beat out NDP candidate Suzanne Shawbonquit and independent Andrew Olivier.

Olivier -- the Liberal candidate in the last general election -- triggered a scandal in December when he alleged the Liberals offered him a job in exchange for stepping aside for Thibeault.

Media reports say Ontario Provincial Police believe the Liberals violated the criminal code in their dealings with Olivier, and Elections Ontario is also investigating the allegations.

The Liberals had held Sudbury for 19 years until they lost the seat to the NDP in the last election.

Wynne appeared determined to win back the seat, visiting Sudbury six times since calling the byelection.
