MONTREAL - Former premier Jacques Parizeau was in "fair" condition in hospital on Monday, a week after he was admitted because of exhaustion related to a drop in blood pressure.

Montreal's Jewish General Hospital said in a statement that Parizeau requires continued care and will be kept under observation in the upcoming days. Another medical update will be issued on Wednesday.

The Jewish General has said Parizeau's family has expressed its appreciation for the public support he has received as well as for his treatment at the hospital.

Parizeau, 79, was Quebec premier from 1994 to 1996, when he was replaced by Lucien Bouchard.
