MONTREAL - Former premier Jacques Parizeau has been admitted to hospital suffering from exhaustion.

Montreal's Jewish General Hospital said in a statement that Parizeau was admitted to the hospital on Monday following a drop in blood pressure.

The hospital says Parizeau was in stable condition and under observation.

Parizeau's family has requested privacy and the hospital will not make any further comment until a medical update on Wednesday.

Parizeau, 79, was Quebec premier from 1994 to 1996, when he was replaced by Lucien Bouchard.

He announced his resignation after blaming the sovereigntist loss in the 1995 referendum on money and the ethnic vote, a comment that drew considerable scorn.
