It’s a brand-new weekend which means there’s a fresh lineup of films to check out in theatres. Film reviewer Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, joined CTV Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to help you offer his thoughts on three new films playing on the big screen. Resident Evil (Rated R) Mr. Hollywood says this new adaptation of the long-running horror video game franchise is a top tier reboot. “I really like this because it brings the scares, it brings the creep factor, but it also brings the laughs. They’ve made this very funny,” he said. “I loved it. I loved it.” The film is co-written and directed by Zach Cregger. “Resident Evil” stars Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry and Kali Reis. The Weight (Rated R) “The Weight” is a slow-building period piece led by Ethan Hawke and Russel Crowe that Mr. Hollywood says is “gripping from beginning to end.” “You can just sink your teeth into it and go for the ride,” he said. “Ethan Hawke’s character has found himself in some trouble. He’s been separated from his daughter, but Russell Crowe has given him a mission. If he completes it, well, he can reunite.” The film stars Hawke, Crowe and Julia Jones and was directed by Padraic McKinley. Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom (Rated PG) This latest installment in the stop-motion animated Shaun the Sheep series is full of delight and a perfect watch for the season, Mr. Hollywood said. “This is like a good primer for Halloween. It’s all kind of spooky,” Demers said. “In all stop motion you just know how much tender love and care goes into making these, and they do it once again every time with those movies.” Mr. Hollywood’s Top 5 stop-motion movies In honour of the new Shaun the Sheep film hitting theatres, Mr. Hollywood presents his top five stop-motion movies.
