Ottawa drivers received a lesson on the rules of the road during the first two weeks of the school year, with more than 140 tickets issued to motorists in school zones. The Ottawa Police Service says officers conducted 294 traffic enforcement actions at more than 50 school zones during a school zone enforcement blitz between Aug. 25 and Sept. 4. Officers issued 142 offence notices, 132 warnings and 20 Part III summonses requiring a future court date. A total of 82 tickets were issued for failing to stop at a stop sign, 23 tickets for speeding in a Community Safety Zone and 16 tickets were handed out for speeding. “Enforcement activity was highest during morning and afternoon school travel times, particularly around 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., and peaked on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” police said. “With students walking, cycling and taking the bus, slow down, stay alert and follow the rules of the road in school zones. Every trip to and from school should be a safe one.”
