The City of Pembroke and the Renfrew County and District Health Unit are asking residents to help reduce rodent activity in the area. According to a public notice from the municipality and the health unit, residents should take simple steps to eliminate food, water and shelter around homes and businesses. “Rodents can be found in any community, particularly during warmer months when food sources are more readily available,” the notice reads. “Good property maintenance and proper waste management are the most effective ways to discourage rodent activity and help protect public health.” Rodents can create health risks, contaminate food and damage properties. The city and health unit say property owners are responsible for “maintaining their properties in a way that does not attract or harbour rodents.” “This includes proper waste storage, routine property upkeep, and addressing rodent activity if it occurs,” the notice reads. “The City’s Property Standards and Nuisance By-laws may apply where conditions on a property are contributing to rodent activity.” The public notice did not say what prompted the notice or whether there has been an increase in rodent activity in the area.
