Ottawa’s photo radar cameras caught 27,000 speeders in August. Here are the hot spots

More than 27,000 drivers were caught speeding by Ottawa’s photo radar cameras in August, as Ontario prepares to ban the speed cameras on roads across the province.

Statistics released by the City of Ottawa show 27,781 speeding tickets were issued through the automated speed enforcement camera program in August, up from 26,837 speeding tickets in July and 25,299 tickets in June.

A total of 218,200 speeding tickets has been issued by Ottawa’s photo radar program through the first nine months of the year, down from 261,556 tickets between January and August in 2024.

Ottawa’s busiest photo radar camera in August was on Walkley Road, between Halifax Drive and Harding Road. The city issued 3,335 speeding tickets to drivers caught speeding by the camera on Walkley Road during the month.

The photo radar camera on King Edward Avenue, between Bolton Street and St. Patrick Street, caught 3,297 speeders in August, while 2,089 speeding drivers were caught on the camera on First Avenue in the Glebe.

Premier Doug Ford announced two weeks ago that the Ontario government will introduce legislation this fall to ban photo radar cameras, calling them a “municipal cash grab.” The Ontario legislation would require municipalities to remove the cameras and install large new warning signs by mid-November, with permanent flashing-light signage by the fall of 2026.

On Wednesday, Coun. Tim Tierney introduced a motion at Ottawa City Council calling on the province to allow automated speed enforcement cameras in school zones. Council will vote on the motion Oct. 22.

Of the 27,781 speeding tickets issued through photo radar cameras in August, 17,302 tickets were issued to drivers speeding in school zones.

Ottawa has 60 photo radar cameras in school zones, community safety zones and high-speed areas across Ottawa, with plans to install 24 more cameras this fall. City staff told CTV News Ottawa on Wednesday that an order was issued on Oct. 3 to halt the installation of any poles or cameras at new locations for photo radar cameras.

Thirteen cameras have already been installed, but the city says the cameras will not be activated.

Statistics available on the City of Ottawa’s website show 1,081,836 speeding tickets have been issued through the automated speed enforcement program since the program was launched in July 2020. A total of 218,220 speeding tickets were issued between January and August 2025.

The photo radar cameras generated $60 million in revenue for the City of Ottawa between 2020 and 2024, with another $20 million in revenue generated between January and August this year.

The city says revenues generated from the automated speed enforcement program cover the cost of photo radar cameras and support initiatives in the Road Safety Action Plan, including engineering and enforcement to promote road safety for all road users.
