Ottawa students treated to early Christmas dinner

An entrepreneur, volunteers and police teamed up to serve a traditional Christmas dinner to students at an Ottawa school. CTV’s Peter Szperling has more.

A west end Ottawa school got into the Christmas spirit early with a festive lunch, thanks to the generosity of a local entrepreneur.

Nearly 300 Christmas turkey dinners were served to students and staff at Dr. F. J. McDonald Catholic School on Tuesday.

“Some children won’t have a Christmas dinner, and this makes sure that everybody does,” said school principal Catherine Gasper.

“We have many families who are financially challenged, who have to struggle to make ends meet, and, so, we’re happy to have things like this.”

The meals were free thanks to dedicated volunteers and donors.

“It’s really gratifying,” said local entrepreneur Gregory Aboukheir, who is carrying on the tradition of cooking and providing the meals along with his team and family.

“I do it because look at the smiles; look how happy they were.”

Aboukheir partnered with the Ottawa Police Service, who delivered the meals to the school.

“It’s just really nice. Usually, I’m dealing with adults most of the day, and it’s just nice to switch things up. And the kids are happy to see us,” said Const. Graeme Bean.

“We don’t get into schools as much as we’d like to. And just getting a bit of face time is just, it’s nice.”

The festive dinner included turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, and gravy.

“My favourite part of it is the gravy and the turkey and mashed potatoes,” said Godslight, a Grade 6 student at Dr. F.J. McDonald Catholic School.

“The people who gave us this were super kind to donate to us,” said Spencer, also in Grade 6.

“I think it’s wonderful that we’re here today,” said Grade 6 student Amrin, adding her favourite part is “hanging out with my friends and having fun.”
